上半边是“林”，两棵树并排；下半边是一只脚。《说文》说“楚，叢木。一名荊也。从林，疋聲”，把脚（疋）当作声符，只借音。也有人把脚读成意思：人走进丛木里，脚下就是这片林子，那么“丛木”这层意思就是两个部件一起给的。两种说法在字形上都说得通。要和“林”分清楚，就看树中间的底下有没有那只脚。卜辞里这个字是地名；它和后来周代那个楚国是不是同一个地方，学者还没有定论，所以本条只说它在卜辞里指一处地方。

The upper half is 林, two trees side by side; the lower half is a foot. 說文 says “楚 is a thicket of trees, also called 荊; from 林 with 疋 as the sound”, taking the foot as a phonetic borrowed only for its sound. Others read the foot for its sense: someone walking into the scrub, the wood under their feet, so that the meaning comes from both halves together. Either account fits the shape. To keep it apart from plain 林, look under the gap between the trees for that foot. On the bones the word is a place name; whether it is the same place as the later Zhou state of Chu is not settled among scholars, so this entry says only that it names a place in the divinations.
