“州”就是“川”加上一块洲：和“川”比一比，三道水流是一样的，多出来的是中间那个合围的小圈。《说文》说“水中可居曰州”，讲的正是这块能住人的沙洲。

州 is 川 with a sandbank added: set the two side by side and the three streams are the same — what is extra is the closed loop in the middle channel. 說文 glosses it “land in the water that can be lived on”, which is exactly this bank.
