甲骨文“雍”上面是一只鸟（隹），下面是一两个方框。方框一般认为是围起来的水池，也就是后来“雝”字左边那一半的来路；不过它究竟画的是池还是城邑，说法不一。《说文》只把“雝”解作一种鸟名，没有再往下讲。因为下半是什么还没定论，这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 雍 puts a bird (隹) above one or two squares. The squares are generally taken to be walled pools of water, the source of the left half of the later character 雝, though whether they draw a pool or a walled settlement is not agreed. 《說文》 only glosses 雝 as the name of a bird and goes no further. Because the lower half is unsettled, the picture is graded probable.
