甲骨文“祈”画的是一根叉形的旗杆，两个杈头各系一枚坠子，杆身有时套一个方框。同一个形体也用来写“單”，一种叉形的旗杆兵器，要靠辞例分辨；有的写法在旁边加一把“斤”（斧），正是《说文》“祈，求福也，从示、斤声”里的声旁，有它才能把这个字定下来。单看形体两读都通，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。
甲骨文「祈」畫的是一根叉形的旗桿，兩個杈頭各繫一枚墜子，桿身有時套一個方框。同一個形體也用來寫「單」，一種叉形的旗桿兵器，要靠辭例分辨；有的寫法在旁邊加一把「斤」（斧），正是《說文》「祈，求福也，从示、斤聲」裡的聲旁，有它才能把這個字定下來。單看形體兩讀都通，所以這裡的圖形解釋標為「較可能」。
Oracle-bone 祈 draws a forked standard, a weight tied to each prong and sometimes a square frame set on the shaft. The same shape also writes 單, a forked standard carried as a weapon, and only the wording of the divination separates them; some forms add 斤, an axe, which is the sound element 《說文》 names in 祈，求福也，从示、斤聲, and that is what pins the reading down. Since the picture alone supports both, it is graded as a probable reading.
