What this outline draws is argued and unsettled. It has been called the nail of a thumb, a grain of rice, an acorn or some other pip, the flame of a lamp, and a spot of sunlight. Each account covers part of the shape and none covers all of it, so the badge here says disputed. 說文's “白 is the colour of the west; the yin is at work and things take on white” matches a colour to a direction and is no evidence about the shape at all. The uses are clear enough: on the bones 白 stands for the word later written 伯, put before a name or a country's name for the head of that line — X 白; and it is also used straightforwardly for the colour, in records of white oxen and white pigs offered up. One shape, two uses, and they have to be read apart.
