下半是“又”，一只手，这一点没有异议；有异议的是手里拿的东西。《说文》说“史，记事者也。从又持中；中，正也”，把上面那件东西当作“中”。也有人说那是一件叉形的猎具或农具，也有人说是盛放简册、算筹一类的器座。形体分不出来，所以这里标为较可信。卜辞里“史”“事”“吏”还是同一个字：既指替王办事的人，也指所办的事本身，还见于“大史”“北史”一类的称呼。把它直接读成后世“史官”，是把汉以后的职名放回商代，这里只说它是王手下一种有名分的职事。

The lower half is 又, a hand, and nobody argues with that. What the hand holds is argued. 說文 says “史 is the one who records; from a hand holding 中”, taking the upper piece for the graph 中. Others call it a forked implement for hunting or field work; others again a stand for holding tallies or bundles of slips. The shape cannot decide, so the badge stops at probable. On the bones 史, 事 and 吏 are still one graph: it names the man who does the king's business, and the business itself, and it turns up in compounds such as 大史 and 北史. Reading it straight off as the later court historian puts a Han office back into the Shang; all that can be said here is that it was a named post in the king's service.
