The two bundles of silk above are 𢆶, which nobody disputes; the mass below gets two answers. One calls it 火, a fire: fine thread has to be brought to the firelight to be seen at all, and seeing it is hard work — that is dimness. The other follows 說文, “幽 is 隱, hidden; from 𢆶 within 山, and 𢆶 also gives the sound”, taking the lower part for a hill with the threads hidden in it. Some bone forms do open below into two peaks that look like a hill; others draw a spray of flame with an upright through the middle. Each reading has forms on its side, and there is no telling between them at present. On the bones 幽 is generally read as dark, of colour or of light.
