甲骨上画的是一只器皿，里面升起几道弯丝。这几道弯丝是什么，有两种读法：一说是热气，皿里的东西热着，正冒烟气，于是有了“暖”的意思；一说是水，皿里盛着水，字是后来“溫”的前身。两说都落在同一件事上——皿里有热着的东西。《说文》把这个意思归在“昷”下，说“昷，仁也。从皿以食囚也”，讲成拿饭给牢里的人吃；甲骨的字形里既没有人，也没有牢，这一说对不上所画。另外要留意：《说文》的“溫”条讲的是一条水名——“溫，水。出犍為涪，南入黔水”——和冷热无关。卜辞里这个字的辞例不多，读法也未定。

What the bones draw is a vessel with several wavy strands rising out of it. Those strands get two readings: steam, from something hot in the vessel, which is where the sense “warm” comes from; or water, the vessel holding water, the graph being the ancestor of the later 溫. Both land on the same thing — something hot standing in a dish. 說文 files the sense under 昷: “昷 is 仁, kindness; from a dish, by which a prisoner is fed”, that is, bringing food to someone shut up. There is no person and no enclosure in the bone graph, so that reading does not match the picture. Note too that 說文's own entry for 溫 is about a river — “溫: a river, rising at Fu in Qianwei and running south into the Qian” — and has nothing to do with heat. Examples of the character on the bones are few, and the reading is unsettled.
