The lower half is a mouth and the upper half is running water, 川, and that much is clear. The argument is over the lower half: 說文 says “侃 is firm and straight; from 㐰, which is the old form of 信, and from 川, taken for the water that never rests day or night”, making it 㐰 — a person with a mouth — rather than a mouth alone. The other reading takes the shape at face value as 口. It should be said that fixing this shape as 侃 rests mainly on the matching graph on the Western Zhou vessel 保侃母簋; examples on the bones are few and read in more than one way. “Firm and straight” comes from 說文, while the graph itself draws only a mouth and water.
