甲骨文“祟”下半是“示”，祭台，这一点没有疑问；上半是一簇向四面放射的笔画。《说文》把上半分析成“出”，说“祟，神祸也，从示从出”，意思是祸从神那里出来；但甲骨文这一簇写得像星芒，和“出”常见的写法并不一样，它究竟画的是什么还说不准，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。卜辞里问“有祟”“亡祟”，就是问会不会有神降下的灾祸。

The lower half of oracle-bone 祟 is 示, the altar, and that much is not in doubt; the upper half is a spray of strokes radiating outward. 《說文》 reads the upper half as 出 and glosses the character as harm from a spirit, from 示 and 出 — the harm coming out from the god. But the oracle spray is cut like a starburst rather than in the usual shape of 出, and what it draws is still unsettled, so the picture is graded probable. The divinations ask 有祟 or 亡祟: whether harm will be sent or not.
