手加丝，两样都画在骨上：上面是手指，下面每一股丝都拧成小圈，那是丝绳搓起来的纹。股数不定，两股到三股都有；有的形干脆把圈省成直画，只留下几条垂线。《说文》说“系，系也。从糸，丿声”——按小篆的写法，手已经缩成一撇了；可是《说文》同条又收了籀文的写法：“籀文系从爪、丝”，爪就是手，丝就是这几股——籀文保住的正是骨上这副样子。认它看两处：顶上有手，底下的线打圈。

Hand and silk, both on the bone: fingers above, and below them each strand twisted into small loops, the grain of cord that has been rolled together. The number of strands is not fixed — two or three — and some forms drop the loops altogether and leave plain hanging lines. 說文 says “系 is to tie; from 糸, with 丿 as the sound”, which fits the small seal, where the hand has shrunk to a single slanting stroke. But the same entry records a 籀 form: “the 籀 form of 系 is from 爪 and 絲” — 爪 is the hand, 絲 the strands, and that older form keeps exactly what the bone shows. Two places name it: a hand on top, looped lines below.
