甲骨文“束”画的是捆起来的一束东西：中间是扎紧的地方，上下露着枝头。它和“东”的字形几乎一样，学界一般靠辞例来分：读作“束”的多指捆扎起来的东西（《说文》认为是一捆木柴，也有学者认为跟“东”一样是两头扎紧的口袋），读作“东”的用于方位和地名，因此这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。《说文》说“束，缚也。从囗、木”，把中间那一圈看作绳子。
甲骨文「束」畫的是捆起來的一束東西：中間是紮緊的地方，上下露著枝頭。它和「東」的字形幾乎一樣，學界一般靠辭例來分：讀作「束」的多指捆紮起來的東西（《說文》認為是一捆木柴，也有學者認為跟「東」一樣是兩頭紮緊的口袋），讀作「東」的用於方位和地名，因此這裡的圖形解釋標為「較可能」。《說文》說「束，縛也。从囗、木」，把中間那一圈看作繩子。
Oracle-bone 束 draws something tied into a bundle: the tie in the middle, the twig ends showing top and bottom. Its shape is all but identical to 東, and scholars separate the two by context — read as 束 it is usually something tied into a bundle — 說文 takes that for a faggot of wood, while some scholars read the same picture as the sack tied at both ends that 東 draws — and read as 東 it stands for the direction and for place names. That is why the reading is graded probable here. 說文 glosses it 「束，縛也。从囗、木」, taking the ring in the middle for the cord.
