甲骨文“东”画的是什么，学界有两种说法：现代古文字学者多数认为是两头扎紧的口袋（后来写作“橐”），“东方”的“东”是借它的音；《说文》引官溥的旧说，把它看成“日在木中”——太阳升到树的中间，所以指东方。前一种说法目前占多数，因此标为“较可能”。和“束”比，“东”的袋身里常横着一道或两道捆绳。

What oracle-bone 東 depicts is argued two ways. Most modern palaeographers take it for a sack tied shut at both ends — later written 橐 — with 東 “east” borrowed for the sound. 說文, quoting 官溥, reads it as 日在木中, the sun risen into the middle of a tree, hence the east. The first reading leads today, so the badge here is probable. Against 束, the body of 東 usually has one or two cords running across it.
