甲骨文“西”画的是什么，说法不一：罗振玉认为画的是鸟巢——太阳西落，鸟就归巢，所以“西”又是“棲（栖）”的本字，《说文》说的“西，鸟在巢上”正是这个意思；也有学者把它看作一只编起来的容器；张玉金、季旭昇等则认为它本是“囟”，两个字古音相近，借来记方位。鸟巢一说较为通行，因此这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。不论按哪一说，“西方”的“西”都是借音来的。和“网”比，“西”的编纹外面还有一圈收口的轮廓。

What oracle-bone 西 depicts is argued several ways. 羅振玉 read it as a bird's nest — the sun goes west, the birds come home to roost, which makes 西 the original character for 棲 “to roost”; 說文's 「西，鳥在巢上」, a bird over its nest, says the same thing. Others take the shape for a woven container; 張玉金 and 季旭昇 read it instead as a borrowing of 囟, the two being close in old pronunciation. The nest reading is the commoner one, so the badge here is probable — and on any of the readings, 西 “west” is a loan for the sound. Against 網, the weave of 西 sits inside a closed outline that draws in at the rim.
