甲骨文“西”画的是什么，说法不一：罗振玉认为画的是鸟巢——太阳西落，鸟就归巢，所以“西”又是“棲（栖）”的本字，《说文》说的“西，鸟在巢上”正是这个意思；也有学者把它看作一只编起来的容器；张玉金、季旭昇等则认为它本是“囟”，两个字古音相近，借来记方位。鸟巢一说较为通行，因此这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。方位的“西”怎么来的也有两说：多数人当作借音，杜学知则认为是由鸟归巢联想到夕阳西下，属于引申而不是纯粹假借。和“网”比，“西”的编纹外面还有一圈收口的轮廓。

What oracle-bone 西 depicts is argued several ways. 羅振玉 read it as a bird's nest — the sun goes west, the birds come home to roost, which makes 西 the original character for 棲 “to roost”; 說文's 「西，鳥在巢上」, a bird over its nest, says the same thing. Others take the shape for a woven container; 張玉金 and 季旭昇 read it instead as a borrowing of 囟, the two being close in old pronunciation. The nest reading is the commoner one, so the badge here is probable. How the graph came to write the direction is argued too: most take it as a loan for the sound, while 杜學知 holds that the sense grew out of the roosting image — the birds come home as the sun goes down — and so is an extension rather than a pure loan. Against 網, the weave of 西 sits inside a closed outline that draws in at the rim.
