上面是“辛”：一件上宽下尖的刀具，商代用来在人身上刺刻记号，所以它常出现在与罪人、俘虏、奴役身份有关的字里；下面是“女”，两臂交叠、屈膝跪坐。两部分合起来记身份低下的女子。《说文》说“妾，有罪女子，给事之得接于君者”。和“妻”相比，“妾”头上是刀形的记号，不是竖起的头发和一只手。

The upper part is 辛, a blade broad at the top and pointed below, used in Shang times to cut marks into people; it turns up in a whole family of characters for the convicted, the captured and the enslaved. Below it is 女, a woman kneeling with folded arms. Together they write a woman of servile status. The Shuowen says '妾 is a woman under sentence, assigned to service, who may attend on her lord'. Next to 妻, what stands over the head of 妾 is a blade sign, not upstanding hair and a hand.
