字是“鱼”加“口”，两层都清楚。难处在于怎么把它读成一个词。一说鱼入口是好味道，和“甘”“旨”是一路，卜辞里的“鲁”多数读法正是当一句好话用，近于“嘉”“善”。一说依《说文》：“魯，鈍詞也。从白，鮺省聲”，把底下那一层看成“白”，讲成迟钝。可是甲骨上底下明明是一张口，不是“白”；“白”是后来字形变样的结果。所以“迟钝”这个意思，出现得比字晚得多，和甲骨上画的鱼与口对不上。

The character is 魚 over 口, and both tiers are plain enough; the hard part is what word to read. One line says a fish in the mouth is a good taste, of a piece with 甘 and 旨, and most readings of 魯 on the bones do take it as a word of approval, close to 嘉 or 善. The other follows 說文 — “魯 is a word for dullness; from 白, with an abbreviated 鮺 as the phonetic” — taking the lower tier for 白. But on the bones the lower tier is clearly a mouth and not 白; the 白 came out of a later drift in the shape. The sense “dull” therefore arrives long after the character, and does not match the fish and mouth that the bones draw.
