屋顶是“宀”，里面那个楔形加方框就是单写的“石”：岩檐在上，石块在下。往下怎么讲，两说并行。一说照画面读：屋加石，是石头底下的屋子，也就是《说文》所记的第二义“一曰洞屋”。另一说照声音读：《说文》正文先说“宕，過也”，又说“从宀，碭省聲”——按这个分法，“石”只借来记音，和岩檐无关。同一幅画，一边当画看，一边当音看。要提醒的是，本字第一形上只刻了岩檐，没有那个方框。

The roof is 宀, and the wedge with its box is the standalone 石: the rock lip above, the stone below. From there two readings run side by side. One takes the picture at face value — roof plus stone, a dwelling under rock, which is the second gloss 說文 records: “or: a cave house.” The other takes the sound: 說文's main line reads “宕 is to pass beyond”, and it analyses the character as 宀 with an abbreviated 碭 for sound, which makes the 石 a borrowed noise and not a rock at all. One picture, read once as picture and once as sound. Note that the first form cited here carries only the rock lip; the box is not cut on that piece.
