“犅”把“牛”写在下面，把声符“冈”写在上面。“冈”的上半是“网”，一个带交画的方框，下垂的那道长笔是框外的一边。卜辞里的“犅”是祭祀用的公牛，常常还要写明毛色，如“白犅”。这个字在甲骨里出现得晚，几乎都在最末一期的黄组卜辞上，所以笔画方正、结构定得很稳。《说文》说“犅，特牛也。从牛，冈声”，“特”就是一头公牛。

犅 sets 牛 below and the sound-carrying 岡 above. The upper half of 岡 is 网, a square frame with a stroke crossing its inside, and the long stroke falling on the right is the outer side of that frame. On the bones 犅 is a bull kept for sacrifice, often with its colour named as well, as in 白犅, a white bull. The character appears late: nearly every example belongs to the last period, the 黃組 divinations, which is why its strokes are square and its layout so steady. 說文 glosses it “犅, a 特牛; 牛 with 岡 for the sound”, 特 being a single bull.
