甲骨文“甲”有两种写法：一个光秃秃的十字，和把十字圈进方框里。它画的是什么，有两种说法：潘慧如、康宝文认为框里的四块小片就是军人披在身上的甲片；于省吾认为字从“囗”从“十”，“十”是声符，画的是人头上戴着盔甲；《说文》则说它是草木种子外面的硬壳，并记一说“甲象人头”。护身甲一说在古文字学界更通行，所以这里标为“较可能”。和“田”比一比：“田”的横竖穿到边框，把方块分成四小块；“甲”的十字浮在框子中间，不碰到边。

Oracle-bone 甲 comes two ways: a bare cross, and the same cross closed inside a box. Accounts of the picture compete: 潘慧如 and 康寶文 read the four pieces inside the frame as the plates of body armour; 于省吾 reads the graph as 囗 with 十 for sound, picturing a head wearing a helmet; 說文 takes it for the hard husk of a seed and records a second account in which “甲 pictures a human head”. The armour reading is the more widely followed among palaeographers, so the picture is graded probable. Compare 田: there the lines run right across to the frame and cut it into four plots, while in 甲 the cross floats free in the middle and never touches the sides.
