“河”是甲骨文里少见的形声字：水道表示它和水有关，“丂”只管读音，不画任何东西。和“水”“川”相比，“河”多出右边那个带拐角的声符，所以一眼就能分出来。在卜辞里“河”几乎专指黄河，商王还常向河举行燎祭、沉祭。

河 is one of the few sound-plus-sense characters already present in oracle bone script: the channel says it has to do with water, while 丂 only carries the pronunciation and draws nothing. Next to 水 and 川 it is the angular sound sign on the other side that tells it apart. In the divinations 河 almost always means the Yellow River, to which the Shang king made burnt and drowned offerings.
