One hank of silk is 幺; two of them side by side make this character, which 說文 records as “玆 is black; it follows two 玄” — silk that has been dyed, an account taken from the thread end of things. On the bones the word has nothing to do with thread: it is borrowed to write “this”. 玆夕 is this coming night, 玆邑 this settlement, 玆卜 the divination in hand. Borrowing a character for its sound is common on the bones, and the original sense then goes quiet; this is one of those. What is drawn is not in doubt; why it should write “this” the bones do not say. The phrase worth remembering is 玆用. A single question was often cracked several times, and beside one of the cracks the carver cut 玆用, usually understood as “this one was the one used”. That understanding comes from where the words sit on the bone — 玆用 always hugs a particular crack — and not from anything the divinations state, so it should be read as a modern reconstruction.
