手是“又”，和“有”“友”“取”下半的手一样。难处在那一横。一说它是指事的记号：字本身画不出“过错”，就在手上加一笔，指着说“这里出了事”，汉字里“本”“末”“刃”都是这么造的。一说那一横另有来历——《说文》讲“尤，异也。从乙，又声”，把上面看成“乙”，把手看成声符，这是照小篆讲的。两说各有道理，加一笔的用意无从证实，所以这里标作较可信。卜辞里的用法很稳：“亡尤”，没有过错、没有妨碍，多半出现在王看过兆纹之后的判断里，和“吉”“亡祟”是一类话。

The hand is 又, the same hand that sits under 有, 友 and 取. The difficulty is the extra bar. One reading makes it an indicating mark: a fault cannot be drawn, so a stroke is laid on the hand to point and say “something happened here” — the way 本, 末 and 刃 are built. The other gives the bar a history of its own: 說文 says “尤 is what is out of the ordinary; it follows 乙, with 又 as the sound”, reading the top as 乙 and the hand as phonetic, which is an account of the seal shape. Each has something to be said for it and the intent behind the added stroke cannot be tested, so the badge here says probable. The use on the bones is steady: 亡尤, no fault, nothing in the way. It belongs to the king's judgement after he has read the cracks, in the same company as 吉 and 亡祟.
