The Shang wrote ten as a single upright. What it draws is not agreed: 馬敍倫 reads a knot tied in a cord, cord-knotting being how numbers were kept before writing — and some cuttings do thicken the middle of the stroke into a swelling, which would be that knot; 裘錫圭 takes the upright for the original graph of 針 “needle”, borrowed to write the number; others read a staff (朱芳圃) or two palms pressed together and stood upright (郭沫若、張秉權). None of these has settled the question, so this is marked probable. Only later was the swelling drawn out into a bar, giving the cross we write as 十 today — and that same cross, in Shang times, was read as seven.
