多数古文字学者认为“壬”画的是绕线用的工字形器具，两头的横板挡住线不让它滑开，和“工”是同一类形状。《说文》说它“象人裹妊之形”，那是从读音附会出来的汉代解释；另有学者把它看作一把有柄的工具。线轴一说领先，所以标为较可能。要和“工”分开，看两端：“壬”的上下两横一样长，中间的竖也在正中。

Most palaeographers read 壬 as an I-shaped spool for winding thread, the end plates keeping the thread from slipping off — the same family of shapes as 工. The Shuowen takes it for a pregnant body, an explanation built on the sound in Han times; others read a handled tool. The spool reading leads, hence the yellow badge. To keep it apart from 工, look at the ends: on 壬 the two bars are the same length and the upright sits in the middle.
