Oracle-bone 折 breaks a plant into an upper and a lower half and sets an axe (斤) beside it: the axe is what cut it. Modern palaeographers mostly hold that what is cut was originally a tree (木), which only later drifted into two 屮 sprigs; 說文 was looking at the drifted shape when it wrote 「折,斷也。从斤斷艸」, “cutting grass with an axe”. Set 折 against 析: both carry the axe, but the plant beside 析 is whole and the one beside 折 is already in two.
