Under the overhang sits a round-bellied hollow, and inside the hollow a few folded strokes rise and fall: flames. Rock over the head, fire burning below.

Two readings pull apart over the hollow beneath the overhang. One reads 石 plus 火: the overhang together with the hollow is the standalone 石, the folded strokes inside are 火, and the picture is stone being heated over a fire — which is why the fire always sits under the stone. The other follows 說文: “庶 is a multitude beneath a roof; 广 with 炗, and 炗 is the old way of writing 光.” That takes the two strokes above for 广, an open-sided building, and the part below for light, making the picture a lit room with people gathered in it. Rock or building, fire or lamplight — both readings still stand. Only the picture is settled: an overhang, a hollow, and flames inside the hollow.
