甲骨文“走”画的只是一个奔跑的人。它和“大”“人”的分别全在手脚：“大”两臂平伸、两腿直立，“走”的胳膊甩成钩形，两腿一前一后跨开。金文在下面加了一个“止”（脚），小篆定成上“夭”下“止”，《说文》因此说“从夭、止”，并解释“夭止者，屈也”——那是汉代人对已经定型的字形所作的分析。

Oracle-bone 走 is simply a running person. What separates it from 大 and 人 is the limbs: 大 holds its arms level and stands still, while 走 hooks its arms out and throws one leg past the other. Bronze forms add a 止 (foot) underneath, and the small seal fixes the character as 夭 over 止, which is why 說文 analyses it as “from 夭 and 止”.
