The bone draws a bound fowl carried in two hands — head, neck, body, cord and hands, one layer after another. 說文 describes something else: “彝 is the standing vessel of the ancestral temple; from 糸, the cord that binds; 廾, holding; 米, the treasure inside the vessel; 彑 for the sound.” On the small seal, then, it is a vessel, the cord binds the vessel and the grain is what it holds. The two accounts agree on one half only, 廾, holding: the pair of hands is there in both. So we grade this probable — whether the bone form is a trussed bird or a bound vessel turns on whether you read the swelling in the middle as a bird's body or a vessel's belly. One thing should be said plainly: the classes of bronze that museums label 彝 today are named by a later convention — 《周禮》 already lists “six 彝” and modern archaeology added its own classes — not by a Shang hand pointing at this graph.
