“寧”在骨片上是三层：“宀”、“皿”、再加底下一笔。“皿”和单写的“皿”一样，是敞口带足的盛食器；最底下那一笔，一横加一根下垂的脚，脚常常向左一勾，《说文》把这个零件叫作“丂”，并说“寧，愿词也。从丂，寍声”——照它的分法，屋子和器皿合起来管意思，“丂”管声音。要提醒的是，《说文》看到的是小篆，小篆的“寧”比骨片多了一个“心”；骨片上没有“心”，只有屋、器、丂三样。

On the bone 寧 stacks three things: 宀, 皿, and one more stroke at the foot. The 皿 is the same open footed food vessel as the standalone 皿. The piece at the bottom — a bar with a stem dropping from it, the stem often hooking to the left — is what 說文 calls 丂: “寧 is a word of wishing; 丂 for sound, 寍 for the rest.” By that division the roof and the vessel carry the sense and 丂 carries the sound. Worth saying: 說文 was looking at the seal form, which has gained a 心 that the bone does not have. The bone carries three pieces only — roof, vessel, 丂.
