甲骨文“宜”外面是“俎”，杀牲用的砧板，立起来看是一个上尖下宽的框；框里那一两个人字形的小块，就是切好的肉。卜辞里“宜”是把肉摆上俎献给神的一种祭。《说文》说“宜，所安也，从宀之下、一之上”，那是照小篆讲的，和甲骨文这块砧板对不上。
甲骨文「宜」外面是「俎」，殺牲用的砧板，立起來看是一個上尖下寬的框；框裡那一兩個人字形的小塊，就是切好的肉。卜辭裡「宜」是把肉擺上俎獻給神的一種祭。《說文》說「宜，所安也，从宀之下、一之上」，那是照小篆講的，和甲骨文這塊砧板對不上。
The outer shape of oracle-bone 宜 is 俎, the stand meat was cut on, seen from the side as a frame that narrows towards the top; the one or two chevrons inside it are the cuts of meat. In the divinations 宜 is the rite of laying meat on that stand for the spirits. 《說文》 glosses 宜 as what is settled and analyses it from 宀 and 一, which describes the small-seal shape and does not fit the stand the oracle scribes cut.
