On the left is 女, on the right 己, and both parts are recognisable. The difficulty is which word the graph writes. One reading takes it as 女 with 己 for sound, giving 說文's “妃 is a match” — the partner who pairs with another, a word of the same family as 配. Another takes it, in the few divinations that carry it, as a personal or lineage name rather than a general term. Only eight forms have been collected, most of them in the 歷組 group, and the contexts are short, so both readings stand and the badge stops at probable. One caution: it must not be read straight off as the imperial consort of later ages. The Shang title used most for women about the king is 帚 (婦) with a name after it, as in 帚好; 妃 is not a rank in that system.
