多 stacks one and the same element twice. That element is the one written for 肉, meat: a bracket open to the left with a short stroke or two inside. The same shape also does duty for 夕, evening, and on the bones the two are hard to tell apart — which is why 說文 says “多 is doubling; from a doubled 夕”, two nights running. Most scholars of the early script take the stacked pieces to be meat, many portions of it; both readings are in the field, so the badge here stops at probable. The commonest use in the divinations is before a title, for the whole set of people who hold it: 多尹 are the several 尹, 多臣 the several 臣, 多子 the junior members of the royal line, 多婦 the king's several 婦. 多子 and 多婦 name groups at court, not the children and wives of one household.
