The eye in the middle is not in dispute, and the things above and below it are mostly taken for 又, a hand. The argument is over the upper one. One reading makes it a hand like the lower, two hands drawing the eye open from above and below, which gives the sense of drawing out. The other says the upper piece is not a hand at all but 冃, a cover, so that the character is 冃 plus 又 with 冃 standing for the sound; that is the road 說文 takes with “曼 is 引, to draw out; from 又, with 冒 as the phonetic.” On the bones 曼 turns up in personal and clan names, with no sign of the “long” use; 曼長 and 曼延 belong to later books.
