上面是竖起来的眼睛，下面是侧立的人，身子中段鼓起，脚下常有一道横线当地面。和“见”比一比：“见”的眼睛横放、人跪着；“望”的眼睛竖立、人站着。金文和小篆又在旁边加了“月”，《说文》据晚出的字形说它“从亡，朢省声”。

An upright eye sits above a standing figure seen from the side, its body swelling at the middle and a ground line under the feet. Compare 見: there the eye lies flat and the person kneels; in 望 the eye stands on end and the person stands. Bronze and seal forms add 月 (moon) beside it, and 說文, reading that later shape, analyses it as 从亡，朢省聲.
