On the left is 耳 (ear), an outer rim with an inner rim; on the right sit one or two 口 (mouth). The two-mouth spelling is common too and means the same thing: an ear catching what is said. The seal form is far more elaborate, and 說文 glosses it with a single word, 聆 'to listen'.
