字形是跪坐的人加一只特别大的耳朵，一只手举到耳边。头顶那几道短笔，一般认为是竖起来的头发，也有人看作举起的手。小篆改写成形声字：外面是“门”，里面是“耳”，《说文》解作“知闻也”。

The glyph is a kneeling person plus one outsized ear, with a hand raised to it. The short strokes above the head are generally taken to be hair standing on end, though some read them as the raised hand. The seal form is rebuilt as a phonetic compound, 耳 (ear) inside 門 (gate), and 說文 glosses it 知聞也 'to learn by hearing'.
