多数古文字学者把这三笔看作沙粒、碎屑一类细小的东西，用“很小的东西”来说“小”。《说文》的讲法不同，它把字拆成“八”和“丨”，说是一样东西被分开才显得小。卜辞的形体只见三笔孤零零的短画，看不出分割的痕迹，所以这里按细物立说，字形解释标为“较可能”。还要留心：卜辞里“小”和“少”常写成一个样子，靠辞例分辨。

Most palaeographers read the three marks as grains of sand or specks of something — small things standing for smallness. 說文 analyses the graph differently, as 八 (dividing) over 丨, a thing split until it is small. The cut forms show only three separate short marks with no sign of anything being divided, so the app follows the specks reading and the badge is “probable”. Note too that 小 and 少 are often written alike in the divinations and are told apart by context.
