The graph splits in two: the lower half is 皿, an open vessel, and the short marks above it are water running over. 說文 reads it the same way — “益 means plenty; it is made of water and a vessel.” 益 originally wrote the overflowing itself; later that sense was given its own graph 溢, and 益 kept “increase, benefit”. Keep it apart from 皿, which is the vessel with nothing in it, and 血, which puts a single drop of blood on the rim.
