說文 is brief: “甾 is what an earthenware 缶 is called in eastern Chu; it is a picture.” On that reading the graph draws a clay jar. The other account starts from the shape: the small hooks turning out at the rim and the lattice of lines across the belly read more like something plaited — a basket or a creel, the lattice being the crossing of split bamboo. The bone forms will take either: some have a single line across the belly, others a grid of two lines and an upright. The rod down the middle is the hardest part to explain — nothing is driven through the middle of a clay jar — so we describe it as the shape has it and do not assign it a use. We grade this one probable.
