“角”是一整只角的样子，不是长在头上的那一对，而是取下来单看的一只：上尖下空，身上的棱刻成一道或两道人字。棱的道数是刻手随意的，一道、两道都有。《说文》说“角，兽角也。象形，角与刀鱼相似”，还特意提醒它和“刀”“鱼”的小篆长得近——在甲骨里倒不会认错，因为只有“角”是上尖下张、中间带棱的。卜辞里的角也指用角做的酒器。

角 is a whole horn — not the pair standing on a head but one horn taken off and seen on its own: pointed above, hollow below, with its ridges cut as one or two chevrons. How many chevrons was the carver's choice; both are found. 說文 says “角 is an animal's horn, a picture; 角 resembles 刀 and 魚”, warning that the three look alike in seal script. On the bones there is no mistaking it: only 角 is pointed at the top, open at the foot and ridged across the middle. On the bones the word also names the drinking vessel cut from a horn.
