“雚”是在“雈”的头下再添两只大眼睛。刻手把眼睛画成方框或圆圈，两只并排，是这个字最显眼的地方。字形上没有疑问；这只鸟究竟是哪一种，说法不一：《说文》把那两个圈看成两个“口”，说“雚，小爵也。从萑，吅声”，讲成一种小鸟；后世多把“雚”当作“鹳”的本字，那是一种长腿的大水鸟，正合它瞪着大眼在水边守鱼的样子。“雚”后来又借作“观”的声符。

雚 adds two great eyes beneath the head of 雈. Carvers cut them as squares or as circles, always a pair side by side, and they are the most visible thing about the character. The picture is not in doubt; which bird it names is another matter. 說文 reads the two circles as two 口 and says “雚 is a small bird; from 萑, with 吅 for the sound”. Later tradition takes 雚 instead as the original writing of 鸛, the long-legged water bird that stands staring at the shallows for fish — which suits those eyes. 雚 was afterwards borrowed to carry the sound in 觀.
