Both parts are recognisable: on the left 壴, the standing drum, and on the right 卩, a kneeling person. Why the two together should mean hardship the bones do not say. One account has the drum beaten against calamity, with the kneeling figure pleading before it; another treats the drum as sound only, borrowed for its pronunciation as it is in 鼓 and 喜, so that the meaning must come from somewhere else. Both are inferences, and the divinations themselves explain nothing. What is drawn is not in doubt, which is what the badge grades. 說文 describes the seal form instead — “艱 is ground that is hard to work; it follows 堇 with 艮 as the sound” — by which time the left had become 堇 and the right 艮, and neither the drum nor the kneeling person could still be seen. On the bones the word keeps one fixed place: at the end of a ten-day week the king asks about the week to come, 旬亡艱, whether the next ten days hold any hardship.
