The character is 网, a net, plus 刀, a knife. What the two are doing together gets two answers. One says the knife is cutting the net: net cords are tough, and only a hard blade gets through them, which is where 剛 comes from. The other says the net on the left carries the sound and not the sense, which is the road 說文 takes with “剛 is 彊, to cut through; from 刀, with 岡 as the phonetic” — and 岡 is itself the character that draws a net. Both readings need the knife; they differ over whether the net does work or only makes a noise. The later uses, hard-willed 剛強 or just-now 剛才, all come afterwards; what lies on the bone is a net and a knife.
