两个人、四条举起的胳膊，里边两只手交在中间，这就是全部。手里没有戈，没有斧，所以字画的是空手相搏，不是持械的战事——这一点与同章的“伐”“戍”分得很清楚。《说文》说“鬥，两士相对，兵杖在后，象鬥之形”，“两士相对”合于字形，“兵杖在后”则是许慎按小篆添的解释，甲骨的字形里看不到兵器。这个字在卜辞里不常见。后来简化字把“鬥”并入“斗”，“斗”本是另一个字，一把有柄的量器。

Two people, four raised arms, and the two inner hands crossed in the middle — that is the whole graph. There is no dagger-axe in either hand and no axe, so what is drawn is a bare-handed grapple and not armed fighting; that is what separates it from 伐 and 戍 elsewhere in this chapter. 說文 says 鬥，兩士相對，兵杖在後，象鬥之形 — “two men facing, with weapons behind them”. The two men facing fit the graph; the weapons behind are Xu Shen's addition from the seal form, and no weapon appears on the bones. The word is not common in the divinations. The modern simplified script later folded 鬥 into 斗, which was a separate character altogether: a measuring scoop with a handle.
