The left half is 田, the same square anyone can read on its own. The right half is a human figure with one extra stroke above the head. Which character that figure is has two answers: most read it as 允, where the stroke over the head is a mark and the word means “sure enough” in the divinations; 說文 instead says “畯 is a farmer; from 田, with 夋 as the sound”, taking the right half for 夋. The two characters are close in shape and the bones do not tell them apart, so the badge stays at probable. More important still, do not carry the later office back to the Shang: 田畯 as an officer over the farm work is known from the 詩經 and from Han dictionaries, whereas on the bones this character is mostly a personal name, and no divination makes it a title.
