Oracle-bone 羽 draws one wing; only in small seal script does it become the pair of wings we write today. The cross-lines inside are the rows of feathers — two in the plainest forms, four in the fullest. On the bones 羽 is also borrowed to write “the next day”, and it is this same wing that stands on the right of 翊. 說文 glosses it as “the long feathers of a bird, a picture”.
