“宅”外面是“宀”，里面那个十字形的零件是“乇”。“乇”本身画的是一根带叶的茎，但在“宅”里它不管画意，只管声音——这是甲骨文里已经成熟的形声写法：一半告诉你这是什么（屋子），一半告诉你怎么念。《说文》说“宅，所托也。从宀，乇声”，把两件事都点明了。骨片上“乇”的脚常常往右一甩，和笔直的竖笔分得开。

Outside is 宀, the roof. The cross-shaped part inside is 乇. On its own 乇 draws a stalk with a leaf, but inside 宅 it carries no picture at all — only the sound. This is the sound-and-sense pattern already fully formed on the bones: one half tells you what kind of thing it is (a house), the other tells you how to say it. 說文 puts both halves plainly: “宅 is what one is lodged in; 宀 for sense, 乇 for sound.” On the bone the foot of 乇 often flicks away to the right, which keeps it apart from a plain upright.
