The upper part is 大, a person seen from the front, and on that there is no argument; what the small opening between the legs is for is another matter. One reading takes it for the mouth of a pit dwelling, so that the figure is stepping out of it — hence “leave”. A second takes it simply as 口, borrowed for its sound and not its sense. 說文 says 去，人相違也。从大，凵聲 — “去 is people parting; from 大, with 凵 for the sound”. All three read the top as a person; the disagreement is whether the opening below is a real thing or only a sound-mark. On the bones the word records leaving a place.
