甲骨文“盟”上面是一个圆盘，盘里画着一道折画；下面是“皿”，一只敞口的器。《说文》把上半分析成“囧”（明亮的窗），下半是“血”，并说结盟要“杀牲歃血”，把血盛在盘里。上面那个圆盘究竟是窗、是盘，还是盛在器里的血，学界说法不一，目前以“囧”一说较通行，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 盟 sets a round disc with a bent mark inside it over 皿, an open basin. 《說文》 analyses the upper part as 囧, a bright window, and the lower as 血, blood, and says that swearing a covenant meant killing a victim and smearing the blood, which was caught in a basin. Whether the disc is a window, a shallow dish or the blood standing in the vessel is not settled; the 囧 reading is the commoner one at present, so the picture is graded probable.
