“丑”画的是一只手，和“又”同源，分别在指尖：“丑”的指尖多刻一个向回勾的小爪，“又”的手指是直的。指尖那一勾是指甲还是用力抓握的样子，学者讲法不一，但画的是手没有疑问。商人用“丑”做十二地支的第二位，和天干配起来记日，“乙丑”“丁丑”就是这样来的。

What 丑 draws is a hand, from the same root as 又; the difference is at the fingertips, where 丑 cuts a small hook back on itself while 又 leaves the fingers straight. Whether that hook is a nail or the grip of a clenching hand is argued, but that the picture is a hand is not in doubt. The Shang used 丑 as the second earthly branch, paired with the stems to date days: 乙丑, 丁丑 and the rest.
